Starting the personal journey of counseling is a decision that can be triggered by the desire to improve personal insights, make changes in behaviors, thoughts or relationships, or in reaction to feeling generally dissatisfied or lost in life. Shannon honors the personal motivations that brings each of her clients into counseling, collaborates with her clients in setting goals, and meets them where they are at in their lives. The belief that all people have the ability to change and find joy and satisfaction in life is a guiding principle that has allowed Shannon to help her clients get “unstuck” and move through personal challenges.
Shannon employs a variety of interventions to address the individual needs of each of her clients. She uses mindfulness (increased awareness), and acceptance strategies in combination with DBT (dialectical behavioral therapy), CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), and solution-focused counseling. These techniques allow clients to increase understanding of self by identifying and increasing personal strengths, developing alternative ways to navigate life obstacles and develop personal coping skills. By creating a stable foundation, through the use of skills and support, clients are able to manage problems or concerns that once seemed unmanageable and overwhelming.
Coming from an eclectic background, Shannon has had the opportunity to work with individuals and families across the life-span over the past 13 years. Her experience in private practice, community mental health centers, residential group homes, and day centers have afforded her the experience to work with individuals and groups with a variety of presenting issues including mood disorders, anxiety, personality disorders, life transitions, grief, psychosis, chronic illness, self-destructive behaviors and interpersonal relationships. Additionally, Shannon has found a personal and professional passion for working with clients who identify with or are a part of a growing LGBTQ+ community where she has found herself on an unexpected personal journey and formed a personal connection to a community that welcomed her and her family with open arms.
Although Shannon works with all ages, she has developed a passion for working with adolescents and families. Shannon has a unique ability to offer feedback, empathy and support to teens who are working towards independence and developing an identify of self, while maintaining their connection to family. Likewise, Shannon assists families in navigating dynamic changes as children mature and seek increased autonomy.
Regardless of age or presenting concern, Shannon creates a comforting environment that allows clients to safely explore their concerns and discover new insights. Using a client-centered approach, Shannon empowers her clients to find the “answers within” and take back control when feeling overwhelmed or powerless. This combination of personal empowerment and increased self-awareness allows clients to navigate and thrive in all of life’s challenges so they may be their most genuine and authentic self.
