Anger Management
Anger Management
Anger is a normal human emotion. However, when it is continually expressed in an unhealthy, unproductive manner, including passive-aggressive behavior, fits of rage, reacting before thinking, physical or emotional abuse towards loved ones or oneself, then intervention is needed. Anger management therapy can be very effective in helping an individual recognize the signs that anger is building before it gets out of control and damages relationships, employment or overall well-being. Anger management therapy can include cognitive restructuring, social skills training, and group therapy as interventions to target the emotional and physiological elements of anger. In other words the goal of anger management is understanding the ”why” behind unhealthy anger and develop coping skills to mitigate outbursts. Signs of unhealthy anger include:
- Loss of control when angry
- Destruction of property (punching a wall, breaking items in your home, etc)
- Intimidation of others
- Frequently regretting or apologizing for your behavior
- Reactivity (you feel like you have a “short fuse”)
- Physical, emotional or mental abuse of others
- Others describe “being on egg shells” around you
